BCS Substitute

Substitute Teacher

Steps to being certified as a substitute teacher.

  1. Apply online through FRONTLINE

  2. Complete Substitute Course: Initial Substitute Permit Course

  3. Send a copy of your Substitute Permit certificate to dbarrett@k12.wv.us

  4. Send an official copy of your college transcript to dbarrett@k12.wv.us

  5. The county will interview all potential substitutes before processing WVDE applications.

  6. If offered Substitute Teaching Job applicant will complete appropriate form through WVDE: Sub Forms Note: You will choose either restricted (only holds 2 year degree or has 60 hours of college); Short-term Substitute (has a 4 year degree); or Long-Term Substitute (has a 4 year-degree and 12 hours in one area-- for example applicant may have 12 hours of English courses to qualify for a Long-term substitute permit in English).

  7. Complete Form 7 and submit it to Mr. Barrett at dbarrett@k12.wv.us or drop it off in person.

  8. All applicants will complete a drug screen through Boone County Schools. Mr. Barrett or Mrs. Banks will give you the required form.

  9. After everything is processed the applicant will be placed on a personnel action for board approval. Once approved the applicant may begin substitute teaching in BCS!

Service Substitute Positions

If you are interested in being a substitute Cook, Custodian, Secretary, or AIDE you will need to take the NOCTI State Exam. To schedule a NOCTI test applicants will:

  1. Complete substitute application through Frontline

  2. Contact Mr. Barrett, HR Director to schedule a NOCTI assessment. You can email dbarrett@k12.wv.us or call 304-369-8276 to reach Mr. Barrett.

  3. If applicant receives a passing score on the NOCTI assessment the applicant will be scheduled for a background check and drug screening.

  4. Bring a copy of your drivers license, social security card, and High School Diploma/GED to your NOCTI testing session.

  5. Once all information is received back from the background check and drug screen the employee will be eligible for employment with Boone County Schools.

NOTE: CPR/AED/First Aid Course is required for Aides and Food Handler Cards are required for Cooks. Potential applicants are responsible to pay for all fees associated with getting hired; except, the Drug Screen cost.

Becoming a Certified Coach

Steps to becoming a certified coach for Boone County Schools:

  1. Non-teachers will need to complete a 14 1/2 hour course through WVSSAC: WVSSAC FAQ

  2. All applicants will need an updated AED/CPR Certificate

  3. Email all WVSSAC certificates and AED/CPR Certificate to Mr. Barrett at dbarrett@k12.wv.us

  4. After you complete your WVSSAC Course and AED/CPR Course you can apply for a Coaching License. Coaches will need to complete a Form 39 and Form 7. Form 7 will be sent to the BCS HR Department for the Superintendent to sign.

  5. Once the county approves your Forms through WVDE you will be asked to make a payment of $35.00 for processing.

  6. All Head Coaching and Assistant Head Coaching positions will be posted through Frontline. These are Extra-Curricular position and require a application/bid sheet for each position.

  7. Assistant Principals/Athletic Directors will conduct interviews and make recommendations for employment to the county Superintendent.

  8. Once a coach is recommended their name will be placed on a Personnel Action for approval.

Note: Auxiliary (Volunteer) Coaches are required to have the same credentials as Head and Assistant Coaches. Auxiliary coaching positions are not posted. If you are interested in becoming an Auxiliary Coach you will need to be recommended by the school.
