Your child may soon notice and discuss with you that our middle and high school schedules no longer include a separate recess time. This change was made to align with state requirements that schools maximize instructional minutes so students have the time they need to master reading, math, science, and other content standards. Recent West Virginia General Summative Assessment results show that we must take every opportunity to increase engaged learning time to help students close achievement gaps and accelerate learning for all students.
Students still receive a guaranteed 30-minute lunch break each day, which provides time to eat, socialize, and reset before returning to class. Beyond lunch, our teachers are incorporating movement, brain breaks, and wellness strategies into lessons so students still have opportunities to recharge. This approach ensures we are addressing state expectations while supporting the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally.
How Parents Can Help
Families play a powerful role in supporting academic growth. You can help by encouraging regular school attendance, checking in on homework, and setting aside time for daily reading and review at home. We also ask that you talk with your child about this change so they understand why it’s necessary and feel supported as they adjust. Working together, we can make sure our students are not only meeting but exceeding state standards.
Day one is complete, and all students arrived home safe and sound. Your dedication to safety and professionalism ensures that our students start and end their school day in caring, capable hands. We appreciate the long hours, careful driving, and friendly smiles you share with our students each day.
